Shingles present as a rash on the skin which causes varying levels of pain and discomfort. The condition is most often found in the elderly, however, it can affect small children, too. People who are suffering from shingles will have contracted chicken poxes in the past. This medical condition occurs when the dormant chicken pox virus becomes reactivated and travels along the nerve paths. Shingles is contagious and can lead to the development of chicken pox. The condition is not spread through touch, however, so you cannot catch it through contact with someone who has the condition.

Treatment for Shingles

Antiviral medicines are effective so long as treatment begins within 72 hours of the first burning sensation. With that in mind it is essential that you consult with Kayal Dermatology right away – especially if you have had chicken pox in the past. There are other medical treatments, however, many of these can cause additional side effects. Dr. Kayal will assess each patient on a case by case basis in order to provide the most effective treatment. You can also contact our office at Kayal dermatology for more information on shingles and how to prevent the condition.

Causes and Symptoms of Shingles

The most likely cause of shingles is a weakened or compromised immune system. Those with HIV or who have gone through chemotherapy treatment are more likely to suffer from shingles. However, even people with a working immune system can develop shingles, and in those cases it is not known what causes the chicken pox virus to reactivate. The sufferer usually becomes symptomatic along the nerve path. As such, shingles will normally only affect one side of the body and face. You may also experience a fever, which is followed by the appearance of a rash two-three days later. Blisters, much like those that occur during chicken pox, will begin to form around the affected area. Eventually the blisters will burst resulting in sores forming.

First time ever at a dermatology office! So I was a little nervous... But they have a very friendly staff and it was nice meeting PA Joel! Felt comfortable and he was informative & made me feel like I wasn’t the only person dealing with my issue. I can’t wait to see some results and get some relief!!

I’ve been going here awhile. I’ve got a few pesky issues, some due to my not allowing areas to completely heal, sins that prolongs my already glacier like speed healing! I really appreciate Dr. Kayal and Joel who combine to take of me and my family.

Was greeted upon my arrival, very nice waiting room, was taken back immediately. Very professional, caring and friendly staff. They want to help you. The PA Joel was very knowledgeable and knew exactly how to help me. I was given a prescription to address the problem. Will be back with other issues, keep up the good work.
